interview Shawn K. Flanagan
Screenwriter, Director, Producer… His career in film making has spanned 30 years and continues on into the future. Shawn was born in Torrance, California and moved on to San Jose, where he calls home today. In 1983 he answered the call for extras in a major movie and was quickly bitten by the acting bug and the spirit of creating movies.
His love of acting lead him to many roles doing “EXTRA” work in such films as The Right Stuff, Sneakers, The Lost Boys, Patty Hearst, Sister Act, Beverly Hills Cop III”, Starman TV, Survival Game, Getting Even with Dad, Sinatra, Angels in the Outfield, Nash Bridges, and later, Mad City in 1997. And through the year also worked closely with film makers Patrick and Sean Donahue on films like Parol Violators(94), Roughcut(94) and Ground Rules(97) and was cast in Sean Donahue’s film Dancing on Coals. And then in 1998 Donahue brought Shawn in as an Associate Producer on the film Shattered Dreams, staring Sean Donahue and Erik Estrada.
But 1998 proved to be a stepping stone to the foundation of what kind of filmmaker and ultimately the kind of man Shawn would become. When not only did he launch what you be a 16 year venture into his own love of the craft with the birth of Almaden Films, but also a 16 year adventure into the awesomeness of fatherhood and the birth of his son Shawn Jr.
It is evident in talking with Shawn that when he speak of his son, that he adores him in every way and truly lives for every moment they share. To say that he is a proud parent would not do justice to the love he shows for his son. And for that alone it would be an honor to know Shawn, but he is much more than that and it shows in the love and effort he puts forth in every film he creates.
It has been said in various reviews, words of respect with regard to Shawn’s love of the craft. Such as… “Shawn is one of the most brilliant and talented filmmakers in this country. Each and every film that he has made illuminates some human issue in a profound way. He does so much with so little, any prudent investor in the film business would do well to seek him out for their next project. I consider him in the same league as Tarantino, but with a bigger heart, or going back further, a contemporary of Don Siegel”. Tim Halpin, December 6, 2007”…
